Quant Quiz - Distance

Q1)-Excluding stoppages, the speed of a bus is 54 kmph and including stoppages, it is 45 kmph. For how many minutes does the bus stop per hour?
9
10
12
20
Ans.- B
Due to stoppages, it covers 9 km less.
Time taken to cover 9 km =( 9/54 x 60) = 10 min

Q2)-In a flight of 600 km, an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. Its average speed for the trip was reduced by 200 km/hr and the time of flight increased by 30 minutes. The duration of the flight is:
1 hour
2 hours
3 hours
4 hours
Ans.- A
Let the duration of the flight be x hours.
Then, 600/x - 600/(x + 1/2) = 200
On solving x = 1 hour

Q3)-A man on tour travels first 160 km at 64 km/hr and the next 160 km at 80 km/hr. The average speed for the first 320 km of the tour is:
35.55 km/hr
36 km/hr
71.11 km/hr
71 km/hr
Ans.- C
Total time taken = ( 160/64 + 160/80) hrs = 9/2 hrs
Average Speed = ( 320 x 2/9) km/hr= 71.11 km/h

Q4)-Two trains starting at the same time from 2 stations 200 km apart and going in opposite direction cross each other at a distance of 110 km from one of the stations. What is the ratio of their speeds?
11 : 9
7 : 3
18 : 4
None of these
Ans.- A
In same time, they cover 110 km and 90 km respectively.
For the same time speed and distance is inversely proportional.
So ratio of their speed = 110:90 = 11: 9

Q5)-A person travels from P to Q at a speed of 40 km/hr and returns by increasing his speed by 50%. What is his average speed for both the trips ?
44 km/hour
46 km/hour
48 km/hour
50 km/hour
Ans.- C
Speed while going = 40 km/hr
Speed while returning = 150% of 40 = 60 km/hr
Average speed = 2xy/(x + y)
(2 x 40 x 60) / (40 + 60)
= 48 km/h

Q6)-A person travels equal distances with speed of 3 km/hr, 4 km/hr and 5 km/hr and takes a total of 47 minutes. Find the total distane
4 km
8 km
3 km
2 km
Ans.- C
Let the distance be 3x km
x/3 + x/4 + x/5 = 47/60
47x/60 = 47/60
x = 1
So total distance = 3 km

Q7)-A runs 25% faster than B and is able to give him a start of 7 meters to end a race in dead heat. What is the length of the race?
10 meters
25 meters
45 meters
35 meters
Ans.- D
A runs 25% as fast as B. i.e., if B runs 100 m in a given time, A will run 125 m in the same time.
In other words, if A runs 5 m in a given time, then B will run 4 m in the same time.
Therefore, if the length of a race is 5 m, then A can give B a start of 1 m (A can allow B to start 1 ahead of the starting point) so that they finish the race in a dead heat.
Hence, the length of the race will be 7 * 5 = 35 m.

Q8)-The distance between Delhi and Mathura is 110 kms. A starts from Delhi with a speed of 20 kmph at 7 a.m. for Mathura and B starts from Mathura with a speed of 25 kmph at 8 p.m. from Delhi. When will they meet?
10.30 a.m.
10.00 a.m.
9.00 a.m.
9.30 a.m.
Ans.- B
D = 110 – 20 = 90
RS = 20 + 25 = 45
T = 90/45 = 2 hours
8 a.m. + 2 = 10 a.m.

Q9)-A motorcyclist goes from Bombay to Pune, a distance of 192 kms at an average of 32 kmph speed. Another man starts from Bombay by car 2 ½ hours after the first, and reaches Pune ½ hour earlier. What is the ratio of the speed of the motorcycle and the car?
1:2
1:3
10:27
5:4
Ans.- A
T = 192/32 = 6 h
T = 6 - 3 = 3
Time Ratio = 6:3 = 2:1
Speed Ratio = 1:2

Q10)-Two passenger trains start at the same hour in the day from two different stations and move towards each other at the rate of 16 kmph and 21 kmph respectively. When they meet, it is found that one train has traveled 60 km more than the other one. The distance between the two stations is?
445 km
444 km
440 km
450 km
Ans.- B
1h ----- 5
? ------ 60
12 h RS = 16 + 21 = 37
T = 12
D = 37 * 12 = 444
