Quant Quiz

Q1)-A train can travel 50% faster than a car. Both start from point A at the same time and reach point B 75 kms away from A at the same time. On the way, however, the train lost about 12.5 minutes while stopping at the stations. The speed of the car is:
100 km/h
120 km/h
140 km/h
160 km/h
Ans.- B

Let speed of the car be x km/h
Then, speed of the train = (150/100)x = (3/2)x km/h
(75/x) - {75/(3/2)x} = 125/ 10x60
75/x - 50/x = 5/24
x = [ (25 x 24) / 5 ] = 120 km/h

Q2)-Two trains starting at the same time from 2 stations 200 km apart and going in opposite direction cross each other at a distance of 110 km from one of the stations. What is the ratio of their speeds?
11 : 9
7 : 3
18 : 4
None of these
Ans.- A

In same time, they cover 110 km and 90 km respectively.
For the same time speed and distance is inversely proportional.
So ratio of their speed = 110:90 = 11: 9

Q3)-A man is walking at the rate of 5 km/hr crosses a bridge in 15 minutes. The length of the bridge is
1000 meters
1050 meters
1200 meters
1250 meters
Ans.- D
We need to get the answer in meters. So we will first of change distance from km/hour to meter/sec by multiplying it with 5/18 and also change 15 minutes to seconds by multiplying it with 60.
Speed = 5 x 5/18 = 25/18 m/sec
Time = 15 x 60 seconds = 900 seconds
Distance = Time x Speed
Distance = 25/18 x 900 = 1250 meters

Q4)-A train covers a distance in 50 min, if it runs at a speed of 48 kmph on an average. The speed at which the train must run to reduce the time of journey to 40 min will be.
45 km/h
60 km/h
70 km/h
None of these
Ans.- B
Time = 50/60 = 5/6 hour
Speed = 48 km/h
Distance = S x T = 48 x 5/6 = 40 km
Time = 40/60 hour
New Speed = 40 x 3/2 = 60 km/h

Q5)-John travelled from his town to city. John went to city by bicycle at the speed of 25 km/h and came back at the speed of 4 km/h. If John took 5 hours and 48 min to complete his journey, what is the distance between town and city ?
15 km
20 km
22 km
25 km
Ans.- B
Average speed of John = 2xy/x+y = 2 × 25 × 4 / 25 + 4= 200/29 km/h
Distance traveled = Speed × Time = 200/29 × 29/5 = 40 Km
Distance between city and town = 40/2 = 20 km

Q6)-In what time will a railway train 60 m long moving at the rate of 36 kmph pass a telegraph post on its way?
9 sec
8 sec
7 sec
6 sec
Ans.- D
T = 60/36 * 18/5 = 6 sec

Q7)-The speed of a car increases by 2 kms after every one hour. If the distance travelling in the first one hour was 35 kms. what was the total distance travelled in 12 hours?
456 kms
482 kms
552 kms
556 kms
Ans.- C
Total distance travelled in 12 hours =(35+37+39+.....upto 12 terms)
This is an A.P with first term, a=35, number of terms,n= 12,d=2.
Required distance = 12/2[2 x 35+{12-1) x 2]
=6(70+23)
= 552 kms.

Q8)-Excluding stoppages, the speed of a bus is 54 kmph and including stoppages, it is 45 kmph. For how many minutes does the bus stop per hour?
9
10
14
16
Ans.- B
Due to stoppages, it covers 9 km less.
Time taken to cover 9 km = ( 9/54 x 60) min = 10 min

Q9)-Avinash covers a distance of 8km in 50 minutes. If he covers 3km distance in 2/5th of time then, What speed should he maintain to cover the remaining distance in the remaining time?
13 km/h
14 km/h
15 km/h
11 km/h
Ans.- C
Total distance = 8 Km
Total time = 50 Km
Time taken to cover the distence of 3 Km = 50*2/5 = 20 min = 1/3 hours
Remaining distance = 8 - 3 = 5 Km
Required speed = 5/1/3 = 15 Kmph

Q10)-An aeroplane covers a certain distance of 420 Kmph in 6 hours. to cover the same distance in 4 2/3 hours, it Must travel at a speed of
580 km/h
550 km/h
540 km/h
530 km/h
Ans.- C
Speed of aeroplane = 420 Kmph
Distance travelled in 6 hours
= 420 * 6 = 2520 Km
Speed of aeroplane to cover 2520 Km in 14/3
= 2520*3/14 = 540 Km
