Quant Quiz

Q1)-A person travels from P to Q at a speed of 40 km/hr and returns by increasing his speed by 50%. What is his average speed for both the trips ?
44 km/hour
46 km/hour
48 km/hour
50 km/hour
Ans.- C
Speed while going = 40 km/hr
Speed while returning = 150% of 40 = 60 km/hr
Average speed = 2xy/(x+y)
= 4800/100
= 48 km/hr

Q2)-A man in a train notices that he can count 41 telephone posts in one minute. If they are known to be 50 metres apart, then at what speed is the train travelling?
60 km/hr
100 km/hr
110 km/hr
120 km/hr
Ans.- D
Number of gaps between 41 poles = 40
So total distance between 41 poles = 40*50
= 2000 meter = 2 km
In 1 minute train is moving 2 km/minute.
Speed in hour = 2*60 = 120 km/hour

Q3)-A man complete a journey in 10 hours. He travels first half of the journey at the rate of 21 km/hr and second half at the rate of 24 km/hr. Find the total journey in km.
220 km
224 km
230 km
234 km
Ans.- B
(1/2)x/21 + (1/2)x/24 = 10
x/21 + x/24 = 20
15x = 168 x 20
x = 224km

Q4)-A car travelling with 5/7 of its actual speed covers 42 km in 1 hr 40 min 48 sec. Find the actual speed of the car.
17(6/7) km/hr
25 km/hr
30 km/hr
35 km/hr
Ans.- D
Time taken = 1 hr 40 min 48 sec = 1 hr 40(4/5)min= 126/75 hrs
Let the actual speed be x km/hr
Then , 5/7x x 126/75 = 42
x = 35 km/hr

Q5)-In covering a distance of 30 km, Abhay takes 2 hours more than Sameer. If Abhay doubles his speed, then he would take 1 hour less than Sameer. Abhay's speed is:
5 km/h
6 km/h
6.25 km/h
7.5 km/h
Ans.- A
Let Abhay's speed be x km/hr.
Then, 30/x - 30/2x = 3
6x=30
x= 5 km/hr

Q6)-A walks around a circular field at the rate of one round per hour while B runs around it at the rate of six rounds per hour. They start at same point at 7:30 am. They shall first cross each other at ?
7:15 am
7:30 am
7: 42 am
7:50 am
Ans.- C
Relative speed between two = 6-1 = 5 round per hour
They will cross when one round will complete with relative speed,
which is 1/5 hour = 12 mins.
So 7:30 + 12 mins = 7:42

Q7)-If John covers a certain distance in 1 hr. 24 min. by covering two third of the distance at 4 kmph and the rest at 5 kmph, then find the total distance.
4 km
6 km
6.8 km
7.2 km
Ans.- B
Let the total distance be y km. Then,
(2/3)y/4 +(1/3)y/5 =7/5
y/6 + y/15 = 7/5
7y =42
y = 6 km

Q8)-Find the area of the square field if a train 800 metres long passes the field with a speed of 120 kmph in one minute.
1.44 sq. km
4 sq. km
2 sq. km
2.64 sq. km
Ans.- A
120 km/hr = 120 * 5/18 = 33.33 m/s
v = d/t ; 33.33 = d/60
d = 2000 m
Hence, in one minute the train travels 2000 m. But, as the train is 800 m long and it passes the field, the length of the field is 2000 – 800 = 1200 m.
Area = 1200 * 1200 = 1.44 sq. km

Q9)-A passenger train takes two hours less for a journey of 300 km if its speed is increased by 5 km/hr from its normal speed. The normal speed is:
35 km/hr
50 km/hr
25 km/hr
30 km/hr
Ans.- C
Let the normal speed be 's' km/hr
Then new speed= ( s + 5 ) km/hr
300/s - 2 = 300/s + 5
s = 25 km/hr

Q10)-Two trains for Mumbai leave Delhi at 6 am and 6.45 am and travel at 100 kmph and 136 kmph respectively. How many kilometers from Delhi will the two trains be together:
262.4 km
260 km
283.33 km
275 km
Ans.- C
