Solutions ▼
Explanation of Question (1- 5): The correct sequence is CFAEBD. (C) fits in the beginning of the paragraph as it introduces the subject of discussion-‘memory’. CF is a mandatory pair because (C) talks about the role of memory ‘today’, (F) discusses how memory was much more important ‘to our ancestors’. The shift from the present to the past is conspicuous as (F) carries forward the idea from (C) with an apt connector ‘To our ancestors though’. Also, the pronoun ‘it’ in (F) refers to ‘memory’ in (C). FA also forms a mandatory pair as the phrase ‘In this early period’ in (A) refers to the ‘the times our ancestors lived in’ alluded to in (F). AE is a mandatory pair because (A) suggests that ‘exceptional memory’ was a prerequisite for success in olden times, (E) extends the idea from there to discuss how some people consider ‘exceptional memory’ in today’s times as a disadvantage, with an apt connector ‘however’ that signifies a shift in the tone. EB is a mandatory pair because (B) extends the idea from (E) to explain the reason for why ‘exceptional memory’ will prove to be a disadvantage in today’s times. BD is a mandatory pair because (B) discusses the cause of stress and (D) follows by negating the cause in (B) to discuss a different cause.
